Crews battle fire at Motel 6 in Southgate, residents sent into cold

SOUTHGATE (WWJ) -- An early morning fire at a Motel 6 in Southgate forced many people and their pets out into the cold.

People staying at the motel, on Northline Road near I-75, told WWJ's Charlie Langton the fire started sometime around 5 a.m. Monday. That's when they smelled smoke, and began evacuating the two-story building.

Crews from multiple departments, including Wyandotte, joined Southgate firefighters in the effort to put out the flames — which could be seen by drivers on the freeway.

The nearby McDonald's allowed people inside out of the chill and wind.
