DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Fire Department crews spent several hours battling the flames after a large industrial fire broke out Monday morning on Detroit's east side.
Firefighters remain on the scene at Aevitas SpecialtyServices Corp, an industrial waste company in the area of Jefferson Ave. and St. Jean.
Black smoke could be seen for miles, and residents heard explosions coming from the site.
Detroit Fire Department Duty Chief Michael Borg said the first call came in just after 5 a.m. from the site where Aevitas recycles oil from Detroit automakers into lubricants.
"There's approximately 100,000 gallons of used oil here, and our biggest concern was a 2,000 gallon tank of sulfuric acid," Borg told reporters. "The sulfuric acid tank was on the opposite side of the fire. We're doing air quality (monitoring)."
"Our HAZMAT team is here. They're driving around monitoring the air," he said. "This is a mostly industrial area, but we do have a couple of neighborhoods to the south."
At this time, Borg said he did not believe that any evacuations were necessary, but that could change.
No Aevitas employees were injured the fire, but Borg said one Detroit firefighter was taken to the hospital after hurting his back while battling the flames.
At 9 a.m., Borg said the fire was under control. However, he said expects fire crews to continue their work at the scene for the next eight hours or so.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time as the investigation is just getting underway.
