FLAT ROCK (WWJ) - The cause of a suspected chemical spill near the Huron River continues to baffle local, state and federal environmental crews as work to clean up the substance continues.

Flat Rock Mayor Mark Hammond said the leak in on-going in a statement released on Wednesday. Emergency crews have contained the substance, but its origin still has not been discovered.

At this time, Hammond said no harmful vapors were identified and there are no health concerns.

The spill was first discovered after a local fisherman noticed a bluish sheen on a tributary of water that runs parallel to the Huron River on Monday evening.

The fisherman alerted the Flat Rock Fire Department and officials from Wayne County, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and The Michigan Department of Environment and Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) responded to the area near 26579 West Huron Drive near Telegraph, around 6 p.m.

Crews scrambled to contain the substance, lowering booms into the water in an effort to catch it. Samples were collected from the Huron River and submitted for analysis.

Out of precaution, the nearby Flat Rock Animal Shelter relocated their animals to neighboring shelters and Huroc Park was off-limits -- both remain closed as of Thursday.

Hammound said officials are still working to clean up the substance.

"Local, County, State and Federal Officials are continuing efforts to address the matter and additional information will be provided as the situation develops," the mayor said in a statement.

He told residents that any developments will be posted to the City's website and Facebook page.

Flat Rock residents are no stranger to chemical leaks. Communities in the city were forced to evacuate in August and September of 2021 when the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant experienced a fuel spill that contaminated the city's sanitary sewer system.

Clean up efforts took weeks to complete.
