NOVI (WWJ) Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the deadly shooting of a 14-year-old Detroit boy at the Michigan State Fair in Novi.

Darean Davis, a sophomore at University High School in Ferndale, lost his life on August 31st in a parking lot outside the Suburban Collection Showcase. More than three months later, his killer remains on the run.

A second 14-year-old boy was shot in the right leg.

Michigan State Police said they were called to assist Novi Police with a shooting at the State Fair at the Suburban Collection Showplace, at Grand River and Beck, on Saturday (8/31) around 10:05 p.m.

Upon arrival, State Police learned of two victims and one suspect. Troopers brought K9 units and a helicopter. They worked with Novi Police—along with other local, state and county law enforcement— to establish a perimeter and “cleared the convention” without finding the suspect.

The police determined there was "no threat to the community." The fair reopened the following day with improved security measures, including weapons detection systems and increased police presence, and an early closing time.

Darean was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the shooting.

Affectionately known as DeeDee; he was a former member of the Detroit City Lions Youth Club. Founder and CEO Dr. Devon Buskin described Darean as "talented, "lion hearted" and "loved" by many, but especially his mother and little brother.

“Dee Dee was a very vibrant, silly, and respectful young man, that loved the sport, and was always helping me out with anything I asked him, even if he didn’t feel like it after or before practice,” Buskin wrote in a social media post. “Never gave me attitude and always said thank you for the smallest things.”

Novi Police’s initial investigation suggested the shooting had stemmed from an argument; and the boys had taken an Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills, and a second Uber from Farmington Hills to Novi with some friends. The other boy was hospitalized in stable condition.

Buskin condemned gun violence.

“We have to come together, all of us, and help put this fighting and gun violence to an end! We have to be better examples for (our children), and be present when it really matters!” he wrote. “They are crying out for our help, and we need to answer!”
