(WWJ) — Nine cruise lines are gearing up and getting ready to take to the Great Lakes after the COVID-19 pandemic put a screeching halt to leisure travel in 2020.

According to mLive, the season will begin in May and will go into October; tickets range from $5,000 to $20,000 per passenger depending on the cruise line.

The vessels setting sail across Lake Erie, Ontario, Huron, Michigan and Superior are considerably smaller than ships that set sail in the ocean — each ship accommodates 200-400 passengers.

Companies preparing their vessels for voyage across the Great Lakes include American Queen Voyages, Hapag Lloyd Cruises, Pearl Seas Cruises, Ponant Explorers, Seabourn Cruises, Silversea Cruises, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, Viking Expeditions and Windstar Cruises.

Cities across Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Canada will serve as ports for the ships, including Alpena, Detroit, Mackinac Island, Marquette, Muskegon, Sault Ste. Marie, Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Duluth and Windsor, Ontario.

“There’s a huge pent-up demand for cruising,” David Lorenz, vice president of Travel Michigan, told Capital News Service via mLive. “There’s a big list of people waiting to get on these ships, and we’re thrilled to see them back.”

Bob Lukens, community development director for Muskegon County, told Capital News Service that ports where ship will dock around the Great Lakes will bring a boost to local economies when passengers comes ashore to shop and dine.

Lukens said crewmembers even bring extra revenue as they shop for extra supplies and produce needed on the ships themselves.
