DETROIT (WWJ) - Metro Detroiters are in for a reality check on Sunday as weather experts say a strong cold front with the threat of severe storms will also bring colder weather and possible snow flurries by the start of the work week.

WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Matt Benz said the big weather change-up comes on the heels of record-setting temperatures in Detroit on Friday.

"Those storms could mean business," Benz warned. "Hail, damaging winds will be the primary concerns, but could bring some flooding downpours as well."

A strong cold front will charge into Southeast Michigan just before midday Sunday, producing showers with scattered thunderstorms with the possibility of being severe between 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Wind could gust over 60 mph while hail has the potential to reach up to 1 inch or more in diameter. Combined with heavy rain, the storms may bring down some trees across the listening area and can lead to localized power outages.

The highs on Sunday will reach into the 70s before the cold front blows through -- and meteorologists say it will also "effectively sweep away the summer-like warmth." Temperatures will plunge 20-30 degrees lower than what Michiganders felt over the last few days.

The much colder air will be accompanied by rain showers that could turn over to snow in Metro Detroit as highs barely creep up into the 40s on Monday, which is below average for this time in April.

Gusty winds will also affect the area, causing cooler temps to feel even chillier.

But the chill doesn't last too long, meteorologists said. While Tuesday will see mostly cloudy skies, temperatures in Metro Detroit will get into the 50s by the afternoon hours and by Wednesday, the sunshine returns to warm us up further into the 60s.
