DETROIT (WWJ) - A woman managed to get her father to safety on Wednesday morning after their home and two others went up in flames on Detroit's east side.

WWJ's Charlie Langton said the early morning fire destroyed two vacant homes and damaged an occupied home on Rohns Street, near Mack and VanDyke.

"It could have been a lot worse," Langton said. "In fact, an elderly man was sleeping in the occupied home. His daughter came home to a burning home and she gets her father out."

Langton said the Detroit Fire Department made quick work of the scene once they arrived and extinguished the blazes. No injures were reported.

According to Langton, the fire appears to have started at the vacant homes before spreading.

Tameika Simpson, the man's daughter, told Langton that her father tried to take care of the properties where just a two years ago, a man died in the now vacant home just next door.

"My dad boarded it up, he boarded up. The crack heads go in, they take the boards down and they do all kind of drugs in there, selling drugs, everything," Simpson said. "So, if my sister hadn't came home, we probably would have had another tragedy because my dad was in there asleep."

The good news, Langton stated, is it appears firefighters were able to save the occupied home.

As far as how the blaze began, officials are still working to determine those details.

No other information was released.
