HARRISON TWP. (WWJ) -- Three people have been found dead after their boat overturned in a crash with another boat on Lake St. Clair.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said a report came in at around 10:45 p.m. Thursday about a capsized vessel near MacRay Harbor in Harrison Township.
A nearby resident called 911 after a woman who was on the boat managed to swim to shore after it flipped. He said it happened at around 8 p.m.
MCSO Marine Division deputies, along with members of the MCSO Underwater Search and Rescue Team, responded to the area and began searching for the other people who were on the boat.
At around 5 p.m. Friday, officials said members of the Underwater Search and Rescue Team recovered three bodies from the submerged boat. They were pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to investigators, there was a crash involving two boats before one of them flipped.
The boats involved have been identified as a black 1981 23-foot Formula Thunderbird — the one that overturned — and a white 199 128-foot Sea Ray Sundancer.
The people were died have been identified by MCSO as 52-year-old Craig Miller of Macomb Township, 56-year-old Heidi Baldwin of St. Clair Shores, and 64-year-old Gerald Grzadzinski of Chesterfield Township.
All of them, officials said, were abord the Thunderbird that sank.
The fourth person, who swam to shore, was a 58-year-old Chesterfield Township woman. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said.
Officials said the 40-year-old Roseville man who was driving the Sea Ray is cooperating with investigators. Also on the Sea Ray were a 36-year-old Roseville woman, a second adult woman, and a child.
No further injuries were reported.
Later in the day on Thursday, the sheriff's office said detectives were continuing to gather evidence and examine both vessels as they work to determine what led to the crash.
The MCSO said, it "extends its deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones involved."
