2 killed in crash on eastbound I-96 in Novi; freeway shutdown delays drivers during Tuesday morning rush

NOVI (WWJ) -- Two people are dead after an early Tuesday morning crash along eastbound I-96 in Novi.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of I-96 at Beck Road as a result of the crash, which happened at around 2 a.m.

Two vehicles involved in accident were traveling eastbound when it appears one had some sort of mechanical issue and stopped in a lane of travel. A second vehicle then rear-ended the disabled car, according to Novi Police Commander Kristie Gruenwald.

Both cars caught fire, and both drivers died, Gruenwald said.

No information about the drivers has been released.

There were no other injuries.

The freeway closure led to major traffic backups during the morning commute, with drivers on eastbound I-96 are being forced off the freeway at Beck Road. Drivers were urged to seek an alternate route, with delays of 45 minutes or more reported.

The freeway reopened shortly before 9 a.m., although there are some residual backups.
