REDFORD TWP. (WWJ) -- A man is dead after police said he drove in the wrong direction on Telegraph Road, causing a multi-vehicle, chain-reaction crash.
According to police, the crash happened late Sunday night near 5 Mile Rd. in Redford Township.
According to investigators, a man driving a Dodge Durango SUV was speeding northbound in the southbound lanes of Telegraph Rd.
At the stoplight, he crashed into a vehicle, kept going, and then hit another vehicle head-on, police said.
The collision caused other cars stopped at the light to be hit, too.
Police said, in total, eight vehicles were involved in this crash.
WWJ's Charlie Langton spoke with witnesses, including Terrance Crank, who saw the aftermath.
"So, they had Telegraph blocked off from 5 Mile and Telegraph, beyond that second light right there. And there were tape everywhere, cops cars everywhere," Crank said. "I didn't see any people, but I saw a lot of damaged vehicle."
Police said the wrong-way driver was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
The other people involved in the crash had "minor or no injuries," police said.
Police said this remains an active and ongoing investigation.
