DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray was arrested on suspicion of drunk diving early Tuesday morning after he was observed speeding while weaving in the road.
WWJ's Mike Campbell confirmed Murray's arrest, which occurred around 2:45 a.m. on Aug. 29. Campbell reported that Murry was allegedly going 15 mph over the speed limit and "weaving" when he was pulled over on Telegraph and Dartmouth in Dearborn Heights.
The chief allegedly refused a breathalyzer during the traffic stop.
Murray has spent over two decades as a firefighter when his career began in 2001, his bio with the City of Dearborn states. He joined the Dearborn Fire Department in 2004 and was appointed by Mayor Abdullah Hammoud as Dearborn Fire Chief, but has served in the position since 2012.
City officials told WWJ just before 11 a.m. that they were aware of an incident with Murry and were looking into it.
"Earlier this morning, the administration was notified of an incident involving our fire chief," the city stated. "We are taking this matter seriously. As facts become known, we will take the appropriate course of action.”
