DEARBORN (WWJ) – An internal investigation is underway after a Dearborn police officer was involved in a crash with a civilian on Sunday.
Authorities say officers were called to the 7700 block of Kendal on the report of someone breaking into a car.
As one officer was responding, they got into a crash at the intersection of Kendal and Diversey.
The officer and the other driver both sustained minor injuries, according to police. Authorities did not release the names or ages of either person involved. No passengers were in either car at the time of the crash.
Dearborn police officials said an initial investigation indicated the officer failed to yield at the intersection and did not have the car’s lights or sirens on at the time.
Authorities did not say where the reported vehicle break-in was happening or if anyone was arrested.
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin called it “an unfortunate accident that demonstrates the importance of following protocols at all times.”
“We are grateful that both drivers are safe,” Shahin said.
Shahin noted the department has initiated an internal process to “review and correct the action.”
