SALINE (WWJ) - A motorcyclist who was critically injured when she struck her friend's motorcycle and was thrown from her own last week in Saline has died, authorities confirmed.
The Saline Police Department said Dina Lynn Sheppard, 61, of Dearborn died on Monday, Aug. 7, four days after the crash was reported near Austin Road and Austin Drive in Saline around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3.
According to police, Sheppard and a 51-year-old male friend from Ypsilanti were riding their own motorcycles eastbound when Sheppard appeared to hit the rear saddlebag of the man's bike.
She then lost control, crossed the center lane, hit a curb and was thrown from her motorcycle.
Saline Area Fire and Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) arrived on scene. HVA took the woman to a hospital with critical injuries.
The man was arrested for suspected operating while impaired. The Saline Police Department is currently awaiting blood results before submitting for charges on the suspected impaired driving.
Michigan State Police also responded with a trained accident investigator due to the severity of the woman's injuries.
Neither driver was wearing a helmet. Officials said that speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
