DETROIT -- Some people are calling 12-year-old Deacon Ashmore a hero after he helped save his younger siblings from a dog attack Monday evening.
Ashmore jumped into action when he and his siblings, and other kids from the neighborhood, were playing outside and a pair of dogs began charging towards them.
The sixth grader “jumped in front of all the other kids and made sure they could run home really fast before the dogs got them,” his mother, Elisabeth Ashmore said, according to a story in People.
While Ashmore’s actions helped protect the others, he got the brunt of the attack, as one of the dogs grabbed ahold of his leg and left it badly mangled.
He is now using crutches to get around after having surgery on Tuesday to repair his injured calf.
His mother says he was able to free his leg from the dog’s bite after yelling “bad dog!”
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the boy’s family deal with medical bills. As of Thursday evening, the page had raised nearly $6,000 to help the family.
