DETROIT (WWJ) A Detroit man was charged after his toddler-aged son found a handgun and shot himself in the stomach on the city's northwest side, police said.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Richard Williams, 29, with Unsafe Storage Causing Injury.

Detroit Police said the three-year-old boy found the unsecured handgun and shot himself on Wednesday (10/30) around 12:45 a.m., at a home on Grand—in the area of Livernois and Davison.

The child was taken via private transportation to a local hospital and treated. He was in the care of Williams at the time of the shooting, police said.

"Another day. Another child injured with a a loaded, unsecured gun," Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a press release from Detroit Police announcing the charges. "Tomorrow it will be another if we don't universally pay attention and take this issue seriously. These are our children— and if we cannot unite for them, who will we unite for?"

Williams was arraigned on Friday (11/1) in 36th District Court. The judge issued him a $50,000 bond, with a bond redetermination hearing set for Monday (11/4). He's due back in court for a probable cause hearing on Friday (11/8).
