Detroit father charged after six-year-old son shoots himself in thumb

DETROIT (WWJ) A Detroit father has been charged in connection with his six-year-old son shooting himself.

Detroit Police said the child found an unsecured handgun in the home on Ethel (3100 block), in the area of Outer Drive and Fort Street, on May 22nd. He shot himself in the thumb, according to police.


He was taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.

Morris Brown, 34, has been charged with Firearms-Safe Storage Violations—Premises Under Individual's Control—Minor Present and Injured Self or Another, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Firearm.

He was arraigned Thursday (6/20), and given a $50,000 personal bond and the order he must not possess any weapons. He's due back in court this coming Thursday (6/27).
