DETROIT — A 38-year-old Detroit man faces criminal charges after his 11-year-old son was shot in the face inside their home Wednesday afternoon.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Muammar Markus Wallace with safe storage violations resulting in serious impairment and felony firearm.
According to investigators, Detroit police officers responded to a reported shooting in the 8000 block of Artesian Street around 2:19 p.m. on Oct. 7.
Upon arrival, officers found the 11-year-old child lying on the living room floor suffering from a gunshot wound to the mouth.
Medics rushed the boy to a local hospital for medical treatment. Authorities allege Wallace left his three children, ages four through 11, unattended inside the home.
While left unsupervised, Wallace's eight-year-old son found an unsecured handgun in the home and fired it, hitting his 11-year-old brother in the face.
“We at the Wayne County Prosecutors Office have been beating this drum for well over ten years," Prosecutor Worthy said in a statement. "We have an educational campaign, we helped to change legislation, and we talk about it all the time. Please, please, please safely store your weapons at all times. No exceptions! Our children deserve our constant, unshakable, and total commitment here. Every day, 24/7 without fail."
