A mother and 2-year-old child are hospitalized after a fire tore through their apartment in Detroit.

Investigators say the blaze in the second floor apartment occupied by the woman, child, and a man may have been sparked by using a stove for heat.

Deputy Detroit Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell told WWJ 950 crews responded to the apartment on 7 Mile near Hoover just before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"Upon arrival, we had fire on the second floor, and we had fire in two apartments," Fornell said, adding a 26-year-old woman and 2-year-old inside the apartment were suffering from smoke inhalation but their injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Tenants reported that heat was out in the building amid frigid temperatures. Some were using space heaters to stay warm.

The official cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.
