PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A Detroit man is facing multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, in connection with an August shooting at a Pontiac park.
Ruben Aleman Contreras was arrested in Dearborn on Wednesday, by members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team, and booked in the Oakland County Jail.
OCSO deputies and EMS reponed shortly before 9 p.m. on Aug. 23 to Jaycee Park, on E. Walton Blvd., after a call came in from a witness who said her uncle had been shot.
Deputies found the victim lying near the rear of the park with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and right buttock. First responders provided medical aid on site before the victim was rushed to a hospital.
According to investigators, an argument between victim and several other people escalated into a physical fight.
During the altercation, Contreras allegedly pulled out a handgun, shot the victim twice, and fled the scene in a vehicle before law enforcement arrived. Shell casings were recovered from the park, officials said.
"We have another sad example of a verbal dispute escalating into dangerous physical violence," Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said in a statement. "Individuals that do so will be held to account. I am proud of our Fugitive Apprehension Team and their efforts to locate and arrest violent suspects."
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office has charged with Contreras with the following: One count of assault with intent to murder, one count of felonious assault, one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, three counts of felony firearm.
He was arraigned Thursday in 50th District Court, where bond was denied. A probable cause conference in the case was scheduled for Oct. 13.
