DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit man is expected to face charges after he fell asleep at the wheel while drunk and his truck ran off the road.

It happened early Saturday morning when a Michigan State Police trooper spotted a Dodge Ram pickup truck stopped at a red light at the intersection of 8 Mile and Wyoming along the Detroit-Royal Oak Twp. border.

While straddling two lanes, the car didn’t move when the light turned green, according to MSP officials.

When the trooper approached the truck they found the 36-year-old man sleeping in the driver’s seat and he was suspected to be impaired.

The trooper couldn’t get the driver to wake up and the truck began rolling slowly away, eventually running up the left-side median curb before coming to a stop, according to MSP.

The driver then became alert and displayed “obvious signs of intoxication,” officials said. He told the trooper there was a pistol under his seat and he didn’t have a CPL.

The driver was ultimately found to be more than twice the legal limit and he was arrested. The man’s name has not been released, pending prosecutor review.
