Detroit man charged in fatal shooting of 5-year-old son by 18-month-old nephew

(WWJ) A Detroit man is facing a trio of felony charges after his 18-month-old nephew got ahold of his gun, and killed his 5-year-old son.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Tuesday announced the case against 27-year-old Colby Vaughn Hardy, in connection with the tragic incident early this year.

The morning of Jan. 20, 2021, Detroit Police were dispatched to a home on Sturtevant Street, on the city's west side, where they found Hardy's young son with a gunshot wound to the face.

The boy was taken to by EMS to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation by Detroit Police revealed that a toddler in the home found Hardy's unsecured handgun in the home, picked it up and fired it, killing his cousin, prosecutors said.

Hardy is charged with one count of Involuntary Manslaughter, one count of Second-Degree Child Abuse, and one count of Felony Firearm.

He was arraigned in 36th District Court on Monday and given a $10,000 personal bond. If released on bond, he was ordered to wear a GPS tether, have no weapons and remain confined to his home.

Hardy's next court date is a probable cause conference, scheduled for next Tuesday. A preliminary exam in the case is set for Oct. 5.
