Detroit man charged with manslaughter for deadly punch during gas station argument

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted as charged after a single punch he allegedly threw turned fatal.

Javonte Rayshawn Barber, 26, was arraigned in 36th District Court on Monday on one count of manslaughter, in connection with the death of a Troy man last Friday.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, the incident happened at around 3:10 p.m. on June 17, at a gas station on E. McNichols near Hoover in Detroit.

It's alleged that Barber and the victim, 44-year-old Samuel Spruill Jr., were arguing when Barber punched Spruill in the face, causing Spruill to hit his head on the pavement.

Spruill was taken by EMS to a hospital were he died of his injuries.

Barber was identified and arrested after an investigation by Detroit Police.

At his arraignment, Barber and given a $100,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether and house arrest if he's released. A bond redetermination hearing was scheduled for July 2.

A Probable Cause Conference in this case is scheduled for July 10.
