MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) – A Detroit man is expected to spend the rest of his life behind bars after being found guilty of murder at a gas station in Warren last spring.

Joshua Carter, 24, was convicted on Friday after a seven-day jury trial for the March 2022 murder of Talal Shamo at a Marathon station on Ryan Road. Authorities say it was the result of a drug deal gone wrong.

Carter was found guilty of second-degree murder, felony murder in the first-degree and two counts of felony firearm. He is set to be sentenced at the end of September.

“The defendant callously disregarded human life, turning a drug deal into a deadly shooting,” Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, per a press release.”

Investigators say on March 23, 2022 Shamo pulled into the parking lot of the gas station in his Audi and sat there for several minutes before a Ford Fusion pulled up next to him, according to previous reports the day Carter turned himself in to police the following week.

Christopher Slade – Carter’s co-defendant who is expected to stand trial this fall – got out of the Ford’s passenger seat and entered the Audi. He went back to the Fusion a few minutes later, according to authorities.

But Shamo then got out of his car and tried to flag down the Ford. The same passenger ultimately got back into Shamo’s Audi. A struggle ensued minutes later and shots were fired, according to prosecutors.

Video shared in court showed Shamo opening his door and falling to the ground. Carter was seen on video walking over to the Audi and firing several shots at Shamo.

Prosecutors referred to those shots as “kill shots” during a preliminary exam last July.
