Detroit Mayor-elect Sheffield ties the knot in private Sunday ceremony

(WWJ) Detroit Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield has a new title, wife.

Sheffield's Rise Higher Detroit organization confirmed Monday morning that Sheffield and her fiance', Rickey Jackson, Jr., exchanged vows in a private ceremony over the weekend in Detroit.

A statement says the couple is "thrilled to begin their new life together while continuing their shared commitment to serving the City of Detroit."

“We are incredibly grateful for all the love prayers and well wishes we’ve received during this special moment in our lives,” Mayor-elect Sheffield and Mr. Jackson said in a statement.

The Detroit Free Press reported there were multiple city vehicles spotted, along with vendors unloading hundreds of red roses toward the back of the Godfrey in Corktown on Sunday.  Her father, the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, and her Chief of Staff Brian White also were spotted entering the hotel stylishly dressed.

Jackson Jr. works for the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan as the Program Manager for Project Play Southeast Michigan.

Sheffield will be sworn in as Detroit's first female mayor on January 1st.
