(WWJ) -- Two young men from Detroit are in police custody after attempting to fraudulently buy a Dodge Durango from a metro Detroit car dealership.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says deputies were dispatched to Feldman Chevrolet in Lyon Township on Tuesday for a follow-up to a larceny report from late June.
Deputies were notified by the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department that a resident in their jurisdiction received a finance package from the dealership for a 2018 Dodge Durango which they had not purchased.
When deputies reviewed paperwork from the dealership, it was determined the driver's license used to purchase the vehicle was fraudulent.
The dealership had just received the license plate for the Durango on Tuesday and advised the purchaser that it was at the dealership and ready for pick-up.
Feldman Chevrolet employees contacted the Oakland County Dispatch Center to let them know the suspect had returned for the license plate, and deputies responded to the dealership lobby, where they placed the suspect in handcuffs.
But shortly after the suspect had been cuffed, he broke free from a deputy and fled on foot, the sheriff's office said.
The deputy chased the suspect, who was soon again taken into custody in the parking lot of a nearby Lowe's.
While in the parking lot, deputies saw two more suspects exit the stolen vehicle, and they were also taken into custody.
The three suspects, all from Detroit, ages 19, 20 and 21, were taken to the Lyon Substation for questioning and deputies notified the Oakland County Auto Theft Unit.
Two of the three suspects were lodged at the Oakland County Jail, pending the issuance of criminal charges. Authorities did not disclose the names of any of the suspects and did not say why the third man was not lodged at the jail.
The auto theft unit will continue to investigate the case.
