DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit mother and her 7-year old daughter are recovering in the hospital after they were shot in their east side home Monday night.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said this shooting, at an apartment on Farnsworth Street, in the area of Gratiot Ave. and Van Dyke, stemmed from a fight between children earlier that day.
"Children get into conflicts, but as adults we cannot get involved," Bettison said. "And for someone to actually travel, knock on the door, confront a mom, pull out a gun, fire a shot, shooting the mother, and the same bullet shoots the child. It's senseless."
The suspect fled after the shooting.
In a statement, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said the 29-year-old mother and the child were being treated for their injuries, and were both expected to recover.
The mayor condemned the shooting, calling it a sensless act of senseless violence and pledging support for the victims and their family.
“By the grace of God, both should recover from their physical injuries, but the emotional scars and trauma won’t be easy to overcome,” the mayor said
A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, could hardly believe what she heard had happened.
"It's senseless; especially over a kid fight. It couldn't been avoided," she told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton. "Now you've got a parent and a kid in the hospital. It's senseless! And now there's kids out there playing. There were kids out there playing! That's the whole thing."
Bettison said the male suspect is known to the area and drove away in a white GMC Terrain.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800 SPEAK-UP (I800-773-2587).
