DETROIT (WWJ) – The Detroit People Mover is getting ready to move people again.
The People Mover is set to begin running on Friday for the first time since the start of the pandemic more than two years ago, the Detroit Transportation Corporation announced on Thursday.
It will be free for riders for the next 90 days.
The nearly three-mile closed loop, elevated train through downtown Detroit will resume operations with a modified station lineup. Only six stations will be open, while the seven others will remain closed, though DTC officials say other stations will be added in the coming weeks.
The Michigan, Millender Center, Greektown and Grand Circus Park stations will be open, as well as the newly renamed West Riverfront (formerly Joe Louis Arena) and Huntington Place (formerly Convention Center).
The DPM will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays. It will be closed on Sundays.
Officials are still recommending passengers wear masks while riding the People Mover.
“The DTC appreciates the passengers who have been invested in the People Mover’s return – their questions and comments have been important considerations as we chart our way forward,” officials said in a statement.
