DETROIT (WWJ) – Violent crime continues to be on a downward trend across the city of Detroit, according to the latest numbers shared by Detroit police officials on Thursday.
In testimony before the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners, Assistant Police Chief Eric Ewing said if things stay on the same trajectory the city has seen through the first nine months of 2023, “we’ll probably be looking at some really, really good numbers” at the end of the year.
Compared to this same time last year, Ewing said Detroit has seen an 11% drop in homicides and 9% decrease in non-fatal shootings.
While robberies saw a slight 3% rise, Ewing said reports of carjackings have plummeted by 32%.
“I can’t tell you the last time I saw those types of numbers in the city of Detroit,” Ewing said.
When it comes to drag racing, the city’s police officers have been busy. Ewing reported over 300 drag racing-related traffic stops, which led to 168 citations.
From those stops, there were just under 40 arrests, including 24 for felonies, and 13 guns were recovered, according to Ewing.
Ewing also noted police have responded to more than 10,000 calls for mental health services this year.
