
DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit police officer was reportedly injured over the weekend when they were hit by a car and opened fire on the suspect while trying to break up a drag race.
The incident happened early Sunday morning in the area of Danbury and Lantz, near John R and State Fair on the city’s north side, according to a report from WDIV.
Officers responded to a reported illegal drag race in the area. When they showed up there were “a large number of vehicles,” according to the report.
Officers were trying to investigate when one of the drag racers hit the officer with his car while trying to flee the scene. The officer, whose name was not released, fired shots, hitting the driver several times, according to the report.
The officer and driver were both taken to the hospital. The officer’s condition was not immediately clear.
The suspect was being treated for injuries, but his condition was not disclosed, according to the report.
Police officials say the investigation has been referred to the Homicide Task Force, where Michigan State Police will take the lead.”
DPD officials said more information on the incident will be release “in the coming weeks,” according to WDIV.
