DETROIT (WWJ) -- An off-duty Detroit police officer is recovering after he was shot while sitting in his car with his girlfriend early Monday morning.

The couple's vehicle was parked on Fielding Street, near 7 Mile and Greenfield Roads in Detroit around 3:15 a.m. when the shooting happened.

According to Deputy Chief Kari Sloan, several young men began shooting in the area -- a few homes away from where the off-duty officer's car was parked.

Police officials said in a Monday afternoon update no one was hit by gunfire, but the off-duty officer was hit by broken glass. He was treated and released at the scene. His girlfriend was not injured.

The suspects fled on foot, and are still on the loose.

Investigators are still working to determine if the off-duty officer was caught in the crossfire of a separate incident or if he may have been targeted.

This is an open and ongoing investigation.

While police have not yet released the suspects' descriptions, authorities released surveillance video of the shooting late Monday afternoon.

Footage shows the young suspects firing two dozen or more shots, with one of the suspects climbing on top of a vehicle. When the shooting ends, six suspects are seen running away.

Authorities are asking anyone who knows something about the shooting to come forward.
