(WWJ) - When it comes which major cities in America offer the best conditions for mental and physical well being, Detroit earned the lowest ranking on WalletHub's 2024 Happiest Cities in America.
The personal-finance website released its report on February 27 after comparing more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities across three key dimensions: Emotional & Physical Well-Being, Income & Employment and Community & Environment.
"We evaluated these categories using 29 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing maximum happiness," WalletHub explained.
And the Motor City locked in its dismal position of 182 out of — well, 182.
Detroit earned the highest separation and divorce rate and the highest share of adults sleeping less than seven hours. Detroit also took last place in the income and employment ranking.
And while the city didn't bomb in all areas, Detroit rounded out near the bottom for the sports-participation, emotional and physical well-being, and community and environment categories.
Fortunately, the Motor City did not appear on a rankings comparing cities with the highest depression and suicide rates the latter of which included Colorado Springs, Colo.; Billings, Mont.; Juneau, Alaska; Rapid City, S.D.; and Casper, Wyo.
Pearl City, Hawaii, has the lowest depression rate, which ranked 2.7 times lower than in Lewiston, Maine, the city with the highest.
