DETROIT (WWJ) -- It's a great honor for the Detroit Thanksgiving parade — and it's not the first time.
The event, officially called "America’s Thanksgiving Parade," has been voted the best holiday parade in America in the 2024 USA Today 10Best Readers Choice Awards.
"Detroit has been hosting America’s Thanksgiving Parade, presented by Gardner White, since 1924," USA TODAY says. "Since then, it has grown to become one of the country's largest and most popular parades, complete with marching bands, helium balloons, and colorful, larger-than-life floats that make their way down historic Woodward Avenue each Thanksgiving morning."
Parade Company CEO Tony Michaels he and his team, which puts on the parade, were "on cloud nine" upon hearing news of the big win.
Michaels said we all should take pride, as this is an award for the entire city.
"America's Thanksgiving parade presented by Gardner White is, is just a love of this city, a love of our state," Michaels told WWJ Newsradio 950's Luke Sloan. "And at the parade company, it's our job to make it bigger and better every single year and we are elated and we can't do this, honestly, without the greatest mayor in America, Mike Duggan."
America's Thanksgiving Parade also took the top spot on the USA Today 10Best list in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
"It really makes us feel great, knowing that we beat out some great, great cities, great parades; they're all phenomenal," Michaels said. "But, ya know, we think ours is really special; in fact, very special."
