DETROIT (WWJ) – Baseball season is here, as the Tigers take on the Rays Thursday afternoon. While the Tigers start the season on the road, it won’t be long until Michiganders head down to Comerica Park to take in the game, hit the concessions and, of course, get a glimpse of Paws.
The furry mascot is beloved by Tigers fans, and apparently Americans feel the same way.
A recent poll conducted by YouGov named Paws as the best Major League Baseball mascot.
The poll showed 1,000 adults across the country a series of 10 mascot matchups featuring two MLB mascots. In each matchup, people were shown a picture of two randomly selected mascots and asked to choose which mascot is better.
The mascots were then ranked by their win percentage – how often each mascot was chosen to win a matchup – and Paws came out on top with a win percentage of 70%.
In baseball terms, that would be the equivalent of an MLB team winning 113 games. That’s only ever happened twice.
Paws was followed by two bear mascots: the Chicago Cubs’ Clark the Cub and the Minnesota Twins’ T.C. Bear. The Oakland A’s Stomper the elephant and New York’s Mr. Met rounded out the top five.
The worst mascot, according to the poll, was San Diego’s Swinging Friar, who won just 24.5% of matchups, followed by the Cleveland Guardians’ Slider and Miami’s Billy the Marlin.
While Paws may not have a lot to cheer about once again this year, most fans can agree we’re just happy to have baseball season back.
