DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit high school teacher and track coach is facing misdemeanor criminal charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a student.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged 54-year-old Nathan Lemuel Tedford of Detroit with two counts of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct, in connection with an incident back in May.

According prosecutors, Tedford worked at East English Village Academy and was the victim's teacher and coach at the time of the alleged crime.

WXYZ-TV reports Tedford brought a student who has a cognitive learning disability to his home he evening of May 29, allegedly to help him with a sports-related injury, according to prosecutors.

Attorney Lisa Coyle with the City of Detroit Law Department said Tedford falsely presented himself as a chiropractor in order to molest the 18-year-old victim for his own sexual gratification.

Tedford was given a $30,000 bond at his arraignment on Monday. His bond was then increased to $50,000 cash/surety at a bond redetermination hearing on Wednesday. If he does post bond, Tedford is ordered to have no contact with anyone under 21.

In a statement, the Detroit Public Schools Community District said Tedford is on leave from his teaching job.

"When the District became aware of the allegations against the employee we immediately removed him from his school and placed him on paid administrative leave. Now that (misdemeanor) charges have been filed, the employee has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation."

Tedford will next be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference set for July 26.

If convicted, Tedford faces up to 2 years in jail and/or a fine of up to $500. He also may have to register as a sex offender.
