Police: woman found dead with gunshot to the head in the basement of Detroit home; husband in custody

An early morning shooting on Tuesday left one woman dead of a gunshot wound to the head in the basement of a home and her husband arrested for the crime, Detroit police confirmed.

DETROIT (WWJ) - An early morning shooting on Tuesday left one woman dead and her husband apprehended by authorities, Detroit police confirmed.

According to officials, the shooting occurred just before 1 a.m. at a residence on Haverhill near East Outer Drive and Warren. After an investigation, they identified the suspect as the victim's 37-year-old husband.

Police said the suspect had called his aunt around 12:45 a.m. and had asked her to come pick up the couple's children. When his aunt arrived to the house, she discovered the suspect's wife in the basement, dead from an apparent gunshot to her head.

Authorities said the husband initially took off on foot, but police apprehended him around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning and confessed to shooting his wife.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown at this time and police did not release any other information.

The investigation remains ongoing.
