WOODHAVEN (WWJ) – Distracted driving appears to be the cause of a Downriver crash that left I-75 closed for several hours and sent two people to the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened around 4 p.m. on northbound I-75 near West Road, according to Michigan State Police, when troopers got a call to assist Woodhaven police at the scene.
Preliminary investigation shows a 22-year-old driving a white SUV slammed into the back of a Chevy Tracker. The impact of the collision pushed the rear-end of the Tracker past the B-pillar, which is the center support of the car.
The driver of the Tracker, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The driver of the SUV, a 22-year-old from New York, was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said it appears that distracted driving and following too closely led to the crash.
“Every crash on our roads can be prevented if drivers make good decisions behind the wheel,” Shaw said, per a post on the MSP Second District Twitter page.
The freeway was closed in the area for about three hours as police investigated.
