BROWNTOWN TWP. (WWJ) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is investigating a case of illegal hunting in a Downriver community over the weekend.
Brownstown Township Police said one of its officer responded to the area of Telegraph Rd. and West Rd. after calls came in from concerned residents who reported hearing gunshots.
The officer found a car in the area, believed to be connected to illegal hunting.
A DNR Conservation Officer was called in to help, and the two officers conducted a search of the area — eventually finding the hunting site.
There was spent shell casing, a dead deer, the suspect, and a .270 rifle hidden in the woods, police said
Brownstown officials want to remind residents and visitors that gun hunting is not permitted anywhere in Brownstown Township, except within the designated Point Mouillee State Game Area.
Police noted that violations not only put wildlife at risk, but can endanger the community. Offenders are subject to criminal charges, seizure of their firearms, deer and loss of hunting licenses.
Police added, in a social media post: "Thank you to the vigilant resident who called this in—and great work by Officer DuBois and our partners at DNR for ensuring Brownstown remains safe and law-abiding. If you see or hear something suspicious, please contact us immediately. Your awareness helps keep our community safe."
No further information was released about the hunter, including what charges he may face.
The DNR is handling the ongoing investigation.
