MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Oakland County Animal Control is investigating a possible case of animal cruelty after the body of a dog was recovered from a commercial grease pit at a Madison Heights restaurant.

The body of a bullmastiff was found wrapped in a blanket by the owner of the business, located in the 24000 block of John R Friday morning. The owner was discarding grease in the dumpster-like grease pit, when he made the discovery.

He called animal control in Madison Heights, who then referred the case to Oakland County Animal Control.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was called out due to the size of the animal. The dog was estimated to weigh more than 100 pounds. Its weight, along with the grease-soaked blanket, made it difficult to remove from the pit. Winches were ultimately used.

The dog was taken to Animal Control for further examination.
