WESTLAND (WWJ) -- A downed power line has started a fire and is currently causing traffic delays in Westland.

Just before 8 a.m. Thursday morning, a power line came down over the road at Merriman Road and Cherry Hill -- blocking the intersection in all four directions.

The power line also hit a tree, catching it on fire.

Westland Fire is onsite, working to put out the flames.

According to police, the power line is still LIVE. They are advising residents to avoid the area.

DTE reported that nearly 1,000 homes and businesses are without power due to the downed line. The outage stretches from Merriman Road to Henry Ruff and from Cherry Hill to Avondale Street.
