ROMULUS (WWJ) – Metro Detroit motorcycle riders will be taking to the road Downriver this weekend to raise money for veterans.
The Wounded America Motorcycle Ride is set to travel through multiple Downriver communities Saturday as riders raise funds for Foundation 14 and Wyandotte-based Downriver for Veterans.
Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight tells WWJ’s Erin Vee he will be “competing” against the mayors of Taylor, Dearborn Heights, Riverview and Southgate to see which community can raise the most money.
Each community along the route will be hosting “subset events,” McCraight said.
Patriots in the Park will be held at Historical Park in Romulus, with food, games and family-friendly activities and give a viewing area for community members as the ride goes by.
The ride will begin at 10 a.m. at Motown Harley Davidson in Taylor and go through Dearborn Heights, Riverview, Southgate, Romulus, Grosse Ile and Trenton. The ride will end back at Motown Harley Davidson at noon, and more festivities will follow at 1 p.m.
McCraight says he’s been doing the ride for at least 15 years, but this will be his first as mayor. He says mayors of each community are “remaining tight-lipped” about what they’ll be doing to try and raise the most money.
“I apologize in advance if we’re backing you up in traffic a little bit, but it’s for a great cause," McCraight said.
McCraight has been heavily involved with Foundation 14 and says one of his goals in this ride is to get as much help to veterans as he can.
“We wanna support you and let you know we’re here for you,” he said.
