Dozens of dogs in poor health seized from West Michigan home after 'deplorable' living conditions exposed

MUSKEGON (WWJ) - An "excessive" number of dogs suffering from illness and other health issues were seized from a West Michigan home earlier this week, authorities announced on Wednesday.

The Norton Shores Police Department said almost 80 dogs were removed from "deplorable living conditions" on Monday as part of a large-scale rescue operation at a home on 2828 Sheffield in Norton Shores, just south of Muskegon.

According to authorities, a director for Pound Buddies Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in Muskegon came forward and told police that a local resident and owner of Cober Canine had an overwhelming about of animals living in horrible conditions of their property.

Police were also told the animals appeared to be suffering from a number of health issues.

The department said an anonymous complainant was able to capture photos of the animals living in horrible conditions.

"The situation within the Norton Shores home was described as a significant health hazard to animals within the community due to the extent of distemper infecting many dogs," authorities said.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canine Distemper Virus highly contagious and serious disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of puppies and dogs.

While veterinary professionals can offer supportive care and try to prevent secondary infections, there is no cure for distemper.

The department said they launched an investigation into the claims and were able to obtain a search warrant for the home with the help of the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office.

On Monday, Jan. 30, the detectives executed the warrant with the assistance from Pound Buddies, Harbor Humane Society and Glen Park Animal Hospital.

Authorities seized 78 dogs in total from the home and surrounding property, who were then brought to Pound Buddies for evaluations and temporary placement.

An individual was arrested and taken to the Muskegon County Jail, police said. They have since been charged with Animal Neglect and the home where the dogs were taken from was deemed unlivable by the Norton Shores Building Division.

In a prepared statement, the department said it was "grateful" for Pound Buddies, Harbor Humane Society and Glen Park Animal Hospital for "ensuring the safety of all the dogs."
