DPD, community members hand out flyers in search of justice in neighborhood where 11-year-old was killed in drive-by

DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police officers and community members on Wednesday afternoon went door-to-door on the city's east side in search of answers after an 11-year-old boy was killed in a drive-by shooting last weekend.

Latrell Mines was gunned down around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7 while roller skating near Courville and Beaconsfield, in the area of I-94 and Harper Avenue, according to Detroit police.

Detroit police officials say an unknown suspect opened fire from an SUV, hitting the young boy, who was later pronounced dead. A possible motive and target of the shooting are not known. Police were initially reported to the shooting via ShotSpotter.

Officers and community members handed out flyers Wednesday showing the vehicle involved in the shooting, asking anyone who recognizes it or knows something about the shooting to come forward with information.

"Really what we're looking for is anything unusual, anything around that time of 7 p.m. Sunday night, anything that may have been different, anything that someone may have captured on their video system that we can use to bring some justice to Latrell's family," DPD Chief James White told WWJ's Ryan Marshall.

Authorities are also asking the public for help to come forward with anonymous tips through DetroitRewards.tv or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
