DETROIT (WWJ) -- A charge of involuntary manslaughter is being announced against a Detroit police officer in connection with the death of longtime Detroit defense attorney, Clifford Woodards.

If convicted, officer Teaira Funderburg could face up to 15 years in prison.

The 29-year old is also charged with one count of willful neglect of duty, which is a misdemeanor.

In February, Woodards (58) died after being hit by Funderburg's vehicle while driving the I-96 service drive at West Chicago.

Officer Funderburg was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed and blew the red light at the intersection, before fatally striking Mr. Woodards’ vehicle.

Medics arrived on scene and transported Woodards to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“Proper investigations take time and that is what we strive for in every case,” Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “After a thorough analysis of the evidence, the defendant has been charged. It’s true that Mr. Woodards was respected in his profession, but the facts and evidence are what caused us to charge in this case.”

The date for Funderburg's arraignment has not yet been released.
