DETROIT (WWJ) -- Following the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state and Michigan being ranked the worst hot spot in the country for the virus, Detroit Public Schools are going remote one day a week.
DPS will be going virtual on Fridays for the month of December.
As the state enters the fourth wave of the virus, this move, according to district spokesperson, Crystal Wilson, will not only act as a preventative measure to keep students and staff safe, but will also give the schools more time to thoroughly clean their buildings.
Going virtual will also offer mental health relief for both staff and students, said Wilson, as there have been mental health concerns around returning to school full-time as well as the crises encountered around COVID.
To address the issue of food insecurity, students will have access to grab-and-go breakfast and lunch on Thursdays to ensure they have meals for virtual Fridays.
