FERNDALE (WWJ) -- A Ferndale staple is closing its doors for good.
Drifter Coffee posted on social media last Friday that they will be ceasing operations after this weekend.
Drifter Coffee started out as a mobile trailer serving coffee and treats at Metro Detroit events, before moving to a permanent space on Woodward Heights in 2018.
They announced last year that they were moving to a larger location across town, but those plans were scrapped due to higher-than-expected repair costs for the new space.
"Small businesses are incredibly hard to keep alive," the social media post states, and unexpected expenses related to the expansion made the business unsustainable going forward.
Sunday, May 3, will be their final day in business.
A fundraiser has been set up on the SpotFund crowdfunding website to support Drifter's baristas and bakers after the business closes.
The post by Drifter reads, in part:
"This is obviously the worst news ever and we wouldn’t be making this decision if we hadn’t exhausted all resources and tried every idea and avenue to keep things going. Our staff is amazing, please send us a DM if you know of any places hiring so that we can get these beautiful humans back on their feet quickly. We are so grateful for all the community support and outpouring of love that we have received since our very first day in the coffee camper and it’s truly sad that it’s ending."
The business added hat they do wish they had been able to give employees more notice.
