DETROIT (WWJ) Police are searching for a driver accused of leaving an unconscious passenger behind in a crashed car and fleeing the scene on Detroit's west side.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of a crash around 12:45 a.m., on Wednesday, February 19, on the EB I-96 ramp to the Davison.
Troopers arrived at the scene and found a passenger in the car, with the driver's door open and the driver's seat vacant, MSP Second District said in a social media statement.
According to MSP; the passenger was unconscious, but breathing, with a "possible" broken arm. First responders used the Jaws of Life to extract the passenger, who was taken to a local hospital.
MSP's early investigation suggests the driver was speeding and ran off the right side of the road. The driver then smashed into the concrete barrier, crossed the roadway, and hit the barrier on the other side. The car came to a stop "just short" of the traffic light at Davison, MSP said.
Police are looking to find and identify the driver.
"Another crash caused by the driver going too fast and losing control." said MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw. "This one was even worse as the irresponsible driver then fled the scene, leaving his injured passenger behind. If you know who the driver is, please call 855 MICH.TIP or 800.SPEAK.UP"
