DETROIT (WWJ) - One person is dead following a serious crash on Wednesday evening, forcing eastbound I-96 to shutdown while police investigated.

Police have yet to release further details about the fatal incident, but officers responded to the scene on the freeway at Davidson sometime in the overnight hours.

Investigators say it appears the car drove off the service drive and through a fence before rolling down an embankment onto the freeway.

The vehicle eventually came to a rest upside down on the pavement.

A source closed to the investigation confirmed the driver died of their injuries to FOX 2.

It's unclear what caused the driver to lose control at this time.

An investigation is ongoing. Additional information is expected to be released at a later time.

The crash comes shortly after Michigan State Police Michigan stated that 822 people have died on state roadways so far this year.

In addition, 130 more people were seriously injured for a statewide total approaching 4,500. Compared to the same time last year, there have been eight fewer deaths, but 122 more serious injuries.
