DETROIT (WWJ) -- At least one person is facing charges after after allegedly fleeing police in Detroit, while risking the safety of four young children.
The incident happened Wednesday, according to Michigan State Police, beginning with a traffic stop in the city.
MSP said the Trooper 3, in the Aviation Unit, was called in to assist Detroit Police after the driver of a Jeep fled the traffic stop.
After a chase — while being followed by Trooper 3 — two adults and three small children were seen running from the vehicle leaving an infant in a car seat before entering an abandoned home, MSP said.
The MSP Second District released video from the helicopter, showing troopers using thermal imagery technology to track the suspects.
The thermal camera translates heat — i.e. thermal energy — into visible light to help analyze surroundings. In the image, the man and the troopers on foot appear as glowing white figures, despite the darkness.
Detroit Police officers arrived, secured the car and entered the house and located the adults and children hiding, MSP said.
The driver was taken into custody; while it's unclear if the other adult could face charges.
“These suspects showed no regard for the safety of the children in the car or those driving around them. Great work by our pilots and DPD to take these suspects into custody without anyone getting hurt," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement.
MSP did not say what initially led police to try to pull the driver over.
The suspect's name was not immediately released, pending expected charges.
