
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- Westbound I-94 was closed at I-696 during the the Monday morning commute, after a driver in a stolen car crashed on the freeway, according to authorities.
Early in the morning, Sterling Heights Police said they received a report from a resident who had their car stolen from their driveway. As officers checked the area, they saw another suspicious driver. They tried to stop the car, but the driver sped away.
Stop sticks were used twice, but didn't work, police said.
Eventually, the 27-year-old driver pulled onto westbound I-94, where he lost control and crashed in the St. Clair Shores area.
He was ejected from the car and was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.
At this time, an investigation by Michigan State Police is ongoing.
The westbound freeway was closed for several hours, but all lanes have since reopened to traffic.
