DETROIT (WWJ) - One man is dead after police said he was driving his vehicle at nearly 100 mph and lost control before slamming into a building in Detroit early Tuesday morning,

WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene on the city's west side hours after the fatal single-vehicle crash was reported around 12:30 a.m. on Indiana and Fenkell, just east of Wyoming.

"Some pretty amazing speed in this crash," Campbell said.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the driver -- identified as a man in his mid-20s -- was behind the wheel of a red Impala SS with a temporary license plate heading east at a high rate of speed when he apparently lost control and slammed into the Circle Glass Company at 8801 Fenkell Ave.

"The car was going I'm told upwards of 100 miles an hour as it crossed over Schafer and then Wyoming and then hit the building kind of sideways on the front corner of the building and the car split, literally bent it in half," Campbell explained. "The rear end going around the front of the building and the front end connecting into the building itself right through the brick."

First responders were able to get the man out of the vehicle alive, but he died of his injuries while en route to the hospital, police confirmed.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no other injuries were reported.

Police are still conducting an investigation into the incident and combing through security footage from nearby businesses, Campbell said.

No other details, including the driver's identity, have been released.
